The “To-Do” list feels endless, doesn’t it? Or don’t you have one?

Why don’t you have enough time?
According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, office workers waste an average of 40% of their workday. Not because they aren’t smart, but because they were never taught organizing skills to cope with the increasing workloads and demands. Based on my experience, I think this statistic likely extends to many of us as well, whether or not we are office works, business owners or domestic engineers.
“Time is Money”
The old adage says “time is money” and that is statistically true. Both executive and office workers can be adversely affected by poor time management skills.
- An Accounttemps survey revealed that executives waste 7.8 hours each week in meetings.
- In a survey by the Institute for Future and Gallup, results indicated that 28% of an office workers time is spent being interrupted, with the typical US worker being interrupted by communications technology every 10 minutes. That equates to 11 hours a week, given a 40-hour work week.
Can you think of more productive ways you could spend 8-11 hours a week? Do you know how to make that happen?
We all have 24 hours in a day
The difference between success and struggle, or worse failure, is how we use the time that we have. Steve Jamison says “Time, used correctly, is perhaps your most important asset…Treat time carelessly and it will do the same to you and your organization”.
Are you busy or productive?
There is a BIG difference between the two. Having clear and concise goals, using the Eisenhower matrix or other similar strategy and learning when and how to say “No” are critical to being productive and not just busy. Learning to delegate is another key to effective time management.
How often are you interrupted?
Interruptions are one of the white-collar business world’s greatest productivity drains. However, for every hour of planning using organizational processes along with time and task management skills, 3 to 4 hours are saved from redundancy, waiting for information, and poorly managed tasks. That’s a pretty good payoff for investing a little time and energy on the front end!
